Total Knee Arthroplasty
While there are a
number of reasons for someone to undergo a total knee replacement
surgery, the most common reason is severe osteo-arthritis where the
femur meets the tibia. This occurs as the cartilage covering the joint
surfaces is lost and, as a result, painful irritation from the bony
contact. Most elect to have the surgery done because pain is severe and
function has been lost.

What does physical therapy consist of and how can it help?
Outpatient physical therapy may begin as soon as
one week from surgery. The goals of physical therapy may include:
·
Normalizing gait and discontinuing the use of an assistive
device if possible
·
Increasing ROM to 110°
- 125° or to that of the
uninvolved side
·
Improve balance, strength, endurance, and proprioception
·
Return to previous levels of function or better!
Your physical therapist will also work with you on
reducing the pain that results from the procedure and develop a home
exercise program for the best outcome possible.
